Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve is a 10-acre public garden located at 820 John B. White Sr, Blvd, Spartanburg, SC.  Open 365 days a year during daylight hours with no admission fee for families and individuals.  The Garden features a series of ponds; walking trails; plantings of annuals, perennials and shrubs; a native woodland of mixed hardwoods; and a diverse population of wildlife.  The Garden’s tree collection consists of over 1,200 specimens representing over 100 species.  Hatcher Garden is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization.

In 1969, Milliken & Company initiated a program that has transformed much of its 650 acre headquarters from a peach orchard into a horticultural testing ground for identifying, cultivating, and sharing information about ‘Noble’ trees - the best of the best for the next generation. More than 3,000 trees, representing 90 species and more than 250 cultivars, have been individually chosen, staked, and monitored. From its modest beginnings, today the ponds, trees and trails that make up the Milliken Arboretum are described by Dr. Michael Dirr as ‘One of the great tree collections in one of the most beautiful settings in the southeast …. or, for that matter, anywhere’. Nationally recognized as one of the most significant corporate initiatives to develop knowledge about how to improve the environment & aesthetics of our communities, it is open to the public without charge.

Spartanburg Community College’s Arboretum has a tremendous collection of trees, shrubs and perennials that are throughout the campus and intensified in our horticulture garden and several specialty niche gardens.  Our niche gardens include an International Peace Garden, Plant Zoo, Medicinal Garden and Outdoor Train Garden.  The arboretum serves to beautify our campus and provide a living laboratory for our students to learn plant identification, use, and maintenance.

The University of South Carolina Upstate features the Susan Jacobs Arboretum, a 300-seat amphitheatre, meandering creek lined with stones and boulders, lighted walkways, and foliage indigenous to the area among its 12-acres. A place of serene natural beauty ideal for various activities, the Arboretum also serves as the center of gravity for campus life and student activities and provides a place for relaxation, for the enjoyment and advancement of academic studies, for contemplation and reflection, and for cultural, social and entertainment events.

Inspired in part by the work of Richard Florida (“Cities and the Creative Class”) and encompassing a National Historic District, the Wofford Arboretum is a feast for the senses! (www.wofford.edu/arboretum) Visitors, educators, students and staff enjoy this beautiful green oasis showcasing nearly 4,500 trees over more than 150 acres in downtown Spartanburg. This horticultural display is designed to promote environmental consciousness, to educate the community, and to heighten awareness of the importance of trees in a rapidly developing “new urban” world.
